Tyco's potioncart

This potioncart was made in Blender, which we were just starting out with at the time. It's a school project I’m particularly proud of.

Though it took some time, frustration and some YouTube tutorials, in the end I got the cart I had envisioned in my mind.

Not only did we have to create a foodkiosk, we also had to animate it. You can find the animation at the bottom of this page.

Tyco's potion cart

Context

The assignment we got was to create a foodkiosk in Blender. We could each choose what food item we wanted to sell in our kiosk. My classmates picked things like sushi, taco’s, ice cream, burgers, ... But I chose a different approach.

I’m really interested in fantasy as a genre and especially if it is set in a medieval timeline. Because of this, I asked my professor if I could make a potioncart. She didn’t expect that, but was very intrigued and wondered what I could do with that, so she agreed.

Story & Inspiration

Because of my love for fantasy, I created a small story based on a character, Tyco, and his reason for selling potions.
Here is a summarised version:

“This potion kiosk was created by Tyco Campbell, an elf who found himself in need of potions quite often during his adventures. After an accident forced him to halt his travels, he decided to put his alchemy skills to good use and started selling his potions. His potions are now used by other travelers and townspeople.”

For the design of the cart, I immediatly knew the cart would be made of wood. I really wanted to get that medieval vibe right, which is also why Tyco uses a lantern and a candle to light his cart. I imagined the cart filled with various colourful potions in glass bottles, some of them glowing with enchantment.

As a part of the assignment, we had to create a moodboard. In this moodboard, you can see certain things that served as inspiration.

Final product & Animation

So I started working... and working and working. For someone who just started using Blender, I’m impressed I managed to get my potioncart to look this good. I do confess that I have used a couple of tutorials on YouTube to help me along, but hey, why else are there so many Blender tutorials on there?

After a hours upon hours spent in Blender, I had created Tyco’s cart. Then I started to animate it to make it look more alive. The animation gives a better view of the cart and what’s inside it. Some small movements, like a flickering candle, a bubbling pot and a swinging board helped to make to make the animation more dynamic.
